Subfossil remains have been found, for example at Rocky Arroyo in the Guadalupe Mountains and Shelter Cave, New Mexico, where sufficient habitat no longer exists. Different lengths of legs and bills enable multiple species to feed in the same habitat, particularly on the coast, without direct competition for food. Incubation lasts from 21–25 days, usually performed by the female and rarely by the male. Unlike the similar-looking but unrelated herons, cranes fly with necks outstretched, not pulled back. Order: Passeriformes   Family: Calcariidae. Recurvirostridae is a family of large wading birds which includes the avocets and stilts. The mountain quail (Oreortyx pictus) is a small ground-dwelling bird in the New World quail family.This species is the only one in the genus Oreortyx, which is sometimes included in Callipepla.This is not appropriate, however, as the mountain quail's ancestors have diverged from other New World quails earlier than the bobwhites, no later than 6 mya.

Fourteen species have been recorded in Montana. Determine the number of pheasants that can be supported on the project area. Breeding among mountain quail is monogamous, and rarely gregarious. Three species have been recorded in Montana. The wood-warblers are a group of small often colorful passerine birds restricted to the New World.

As the name implies, most are insectivorous. Kingfishers are medium-sized birds with large heads, long, pointed bills, short legs, and stubby tails. Projects on private land submitted in partnership with youth organizations, 4-H clubs, sports groups, or other associations that can guarantee the completion of all project requirements are also eligible. Three species have been recorded in Montana. Some species have feet with two toes pointing forward and two backward, while several species have only three toes.
